Campus Read:
The CSU San Marcos Library and the campus
American Democracy Project are working together on a Campus Read
encouraging all students, faculty and staff to read the same
book. Three Cups of Tea: One
Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time,
by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin has been
selected as the Campus Read for Fall 2008. Written about a
former nurse and mountaineer's attempt to craft peace in
Pakistan and Afghanistan through schools, especially for young
girls, Three Cups, is a book about
courage and determination, the bonds between people, and how one
person can really make a difference in the lives of others. This book is an
exciting and excellent read, a work that
will provoke much thought and discussion among the CSU San
Marcos community. At least three classes have adopted the book into their
curriculum this fall (AY 2008-09).
The Campus Read encourages students,
faculty, and staff to read the same book and participate in
discussions and campus events related to the work. The
American Democracy Project will collaborate with the library
and other campus entities to sponsor a Campus
Read every year, tying the work into the university
curriculum.
We hope through this program to instill a
stronger sense of community for our students and to further our
university’s place in the local community through critical
discussion of the issues raised in Mortenson and Relin's work. This is a
work that can be taught in a variety of classes. Copies of the
book are available at the library and from the
American
Democracy Project.
