CAPI Writing Consultant Description

The CAPI grant is targeted at high school students interested in entering a college or university upon high school graduation. The overall goal of the CAPI grant is to reduce the need for remediation in math and English.

The CAPI writing consultant is primarily responsible for individual and small group consulting in a high school classroom and online. In other words, as a writing consultant you may be hired to provide face-to-face and/or online consulting. When working in a classroom and online, you are responsible for maintaining a cordial and supportive relationship with the classroom instructor with whom you are working. At all times, you are expected to project a professional manner and appearance and to comply with the respective high school’s regulations.

In working with individual students or groups, you will assist each student in improving reading and writing skills. Your primary responsibility as a consultant is providing useful feedback to writers about their writing. Your goal is to help high school students develop their critical reading and writing skills. As a consultant you must be able to respond to the varied learning styles and needs of the students by individualizing instruction and providing multiple approaches within a variety of instructional contexts. Assistance to the consultant in developing and refining your consulting techniques is provided through our mandatory weekly consultant meetings.

The CAPI consultant must be able to address topics such as the following:

  • Asking critical questions of texts
  • Decoding writing prompts
  • Crafting thesis statements
  • Identifying appropriate support
  • Creating well-supported paragraphs that extend a project’s thesis
  • Writing thesis-driven essays
  • Revising texts at global and surface levels
  • Using MLA format
