Rancho Bernardo High School’s (RBHS) team of three
English faculty began working with CAPI in Spring 2001. What a
productive collaborative relationship this past year has been!
2001/02 Accomplishments
Student Involvement with CAPI
- Nine (9) classes (approx. 315 students) used the
OWL this year to receive feedback from CSUSM students on a wide range
of writing projects, terms papers, and college entrance essays; and
- Over 100 students made use of the
Diagnostic Writing Service (DWS).
- Many RBHS students participated in the ELM/EPT free
testing day at CSUSM.
Faculty Involvement with CAPI
- Two RBHS English faculty completed their National
Board exams this year (Mary Pat Fisk and Karen Kravchak);
- Faculty and students tested Inspiration Software;
- Faculty attended special CSUSM CAPI courses for
English faculty; and
- Faculty attended and participated in the Spring
2001 and 2002 CAPI conferences and Writing Center Workshop and Summer
2001 CAPI Institute.
Writing Center News
- During the fall of 2001, RBHS launched its first
Peer Writing Center, staffed by trained RBHS students.
- The initial responses from RBHS students are
encouraging:
- 150 RBHS students used the Center during the fall
2001;
- 74% said their tutor was "very" polite and
responsive to their concerns;
- 51% said they felt they ended up with a better
final product because of their visit; and
- 64% said they received an A or a B on the
assignment they discussed in the Center.
Future Plans
- The Writing Center faculty directors will process
the statistics for writing center in effort to improve the service
provided;
- A Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)
mini-conference on site is being planned for fall 2002; and
- The CAPI team plans to develop a "writing culture"
through the formation of a school newspaper, literary club/magazine,
web-club, and on-line writing center.
