San Marcos has been quite busy launching an after
school writing center in the school’s new computer lab. In the year
ahead, the CAPI team looks forward to developing the campus writing
culture further by reaching out with resources to faculty inside and
outside of the English department who teach writing. CSUSM looks forward
to this collaborative work!
- 2001/02 Accomplishments
Student Involvement with CAPI
- Thanks to the support and ingenuity of the SMHS
faculty and administration, CAPI worked in conjunction with GEAR UP to
design a launch an after school Writing Center in a new computer lab at
SMHS. The center was open to all students.
Faculty Involvement with CAPI
- Laurie Cohen Heather Petterson Kathy Salvatore Mike
Spangler Victoria Tarnovetchi During 2001-2002 the group concentrated on
several particular projects. The first was the establishment of an after
school writing center, cosponsored by GEAR UP and staffed by CAPI
consultants. We continue to work on raising awareness of the center and
refining its purpose. (Severe space constraints at SMHS present a
particular challenge for planning expansion.)
- Journalism at SMHS is the second project. Mike
Spangler is key here, a former CAPI consultant and former news editor of
the CSUSM student paper, Mike is now a journalism and English teacher at
SMHS. He and his students produce The Mark, the new SMHS student paper.
Future Plans
- During the spring semester Victoria Segall, a former
lead editor of the CSUSM Pride, devised a plan for ongoing internships
which would enable student journalists from SMHS to work with CSUSM
student journalists on refining their skills. The North County Times
would mentor the project.
- The group has engaged in intensive planning of
expansion of the CAPI agenda into writing across the curriculum. This
has entailed review of the Standards in science and social studies and
discussion with colleagues about how best to engage a larger number of
teachers in CAPI activities, design of appropriate assignments, use of
tutors and the Writing Center. The high school district is involved in
these discussions and planning workshops.
- We anticipate that the 02/03 academic year will find
us improving and refining these projects as well increasing use of
tutors in both CAPI English classrooms and in the classrooms of newly
recruited teachers in various disciplines.
