About the CAPI English Program

Thanks to the generous work of CSUSM Literature & Writing
(LTWR) faculty and
students and neighboring high school English faculty and students, the
English component of CSUSM’s Collaborative Academic Preparation Initiative
(CAPI) grant is working quite successfully towards an important goal:
reducing the need for remediation in writing among incoming university
students. Since the spring 2000 semester, CSUSM faculty and high school
faculty have been working in CAPI faculty teams on each campus.
In the fall of 2000, the real work with students started.
A team of trained CSUSM students began serving as writing consultants to
hundreds of high school students at four of our five schools:
Rancho Buena,
Vista, San Marcos,
Temecula Valley, and
Vista High School. In 2001,
Rancho
Bernardo High School joined us. LTWR CAPI writing consultants (trained CSUSM
students) provide two writing consulting services to high school writers:
they serve as face-to-face consultants in high school writing centers and
classrooms working right along side students; consultants also work as
virtual consultants via CAPI’s Online Writing Lab (OWL).
The implementation of Digital High School grants on most
of the CAPI high school sites makes the OWL accessible to high school
students. With the click of a button, students are able to send their
questions about their writing along with their writing to a trained CAPI
writing consultant who then provides specific feedback to each high school
writer within 24-48 hours.
Our virtual connections continue! During the summer of
2001, we piloted a digital book club with high school students. Because of
the student interest, we will launch a series of book clubs, facilitated by
CSUSM students, during the spring/summer 2002.
In so many ways, our work has just begun. CSUSM’s team of
CAPI English faculty and students looks forward to continued creative
collaboration with high school faculty and students!
