The option in Literacy Education is intended for K-12 educators interested in positions in the areas of reading, writing, and curriculum. It prepares teachers to assist other teachers and administrators in creating literacy programs that promote not only the learning of reading and writing, but also the learning of subject matter across the curriculum. Candidates in this program will become knowledgeable about current reading and writing theory, literacy research and pedagogy, literacy development and learning, children’s and adolescent literature and curriculum development. Graduates will also have the ability to assist in the development of assessment instruments and procedures at the district level. The option offers a Reading Certificate, a Reading/Language Arts Credential, and a Master’s degree. The Reading Certificate and Reading, Language Arts Specialist Credential requires a valid teaching credential AND three (3) years of successful full-time teaching experience and a passing score on the RICA (Reading Instruction Competence Assessment).
