(Printable version:  Text -- PDF)

Funding: The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $500,000 to CSU San Marcos in partnership with Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Leadership for the grant will be provided by Principal Investigators and Co-coordinators of the Single Subject Credential Program at CSUSM (Dr. Pat Stall, Asst. Professor of Education and Dr. Joe Keating, Professor of Science Education at CSUSM) and Asst. Dean of the College of Science RIT, Eileen Marron.

Purpose: Increase the number of qualified science and math teachers in the North County San Diego area to teach in middle or high schools with the most need. The grant seeks enthusiastic individuals interested in obtaining a Secondary Teacher Credential in Math or Science (Single Subject Credential) and teaching in North San Diego County. The grant is not limited to but is particularly interested in funding those qualified individuals who have financial need and represent populations that have been typically underrepresented in the field of science and mathematics teacher education.

Eligibility: Any student who has or will be receiving a BS/BA degree in some area of science or mathematics or an appropriate related field is eligible to apply. The scholarship awards process will be competitive, requiring both an application for the award and acceptance to CSUSM and the College of Education Single Subject Credential Program.

Maximum Amount of the scholarship: $7500, which may be applied towards tuition (for prerequisites and credential courses), fees and room and board. Other outside funding is also available to prospective teachers.

Procedures: Those individuals interested in applying for the scholarship must complete:

Official transcripts must be mailed directly (or delivered in the sealed envelope) to the CSU San Marcos Office of Admissions from each college or university attended, including a transcript with degree posted and date awarded.  This is in addition to the application to be submitted to the College of Education.

APPLICATION FEES:

CSUSM Graduate/Postbaccalaureate Application - $55.00

College of Education Single Subject Credential Program Application - $25.00

Requirements for admission to the Single Subject Credential Program include:

  1. Successful completion of the prerequisite Professional Education Courses:
EDUC 350 (Foundations of Teaching as a Profession )
EDUC 364 (Cultural Diversity in Schooling)
EDUC 422 (Technology Tools for Teaching and Learning).
The latter may be waived by demonstration of skills or equivalent coursework. These courses may be in progress during the application process. To facilitate this process for the RIT scholarship awardees the first of these two prerequisite courses will be offered on the RIT campus prior to the beginning of credential coursework at CSUSM.

  2. Successful passage of Professional Testing Requirements: California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) and the Subject Matter Competency Test (CSET) or completion of an approved Subject Matter Waiver Program is required (waived with an MS/MA in subject field). Special testing provisions for out of state (RIT) students can be arranged with Dr. Stall pstall@csusm.edu.

  3. Other admission requirements as noted on application process.

The Single Subject Credential, which will be completed at CSU San Marcos, takes approximately 9 months to complete (late August through mid June). As a condition of the grant, awardees will be required, upon completion of the credential program, to teach a minimum of two years in a high need middle or high school in the North County San Diego area. Most states have reciprocity with the California teaching credential, i.e. a credential obtained in California is transferable to another state.
