Frequently Asked Questions:  Course Equivalencies/Waivers


I have taken a course at another institution that I think is the equivalent to a CSUSM prerequisite [Education 350, 364, 422]. How do I find out for sure?

The College of Education at CSUSM maintains a list of faculty approved course equivalencies taken at regional institutions ( approved out-of-state coursework is not added to the list of equivalencies) for our prerequisite courses [Education 350, 364, 422].    Please call 760/750-4277 or email coessc@csusm.edu  to discuss a possible prerequisite equivalency.

I have taken a course at another institution that I think is the equivalent to a CSUSM co-requisite [Health Education, Constitution]. How do I find out for sure?

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing has a list of courses taken at California four-year institutions that meet the health education and constitution requirements for credentialing.  To find out if a course you have taken at a California university or community college qualifies please contact the Student Services Center: coessc@csusm.edu

I have taken credential coursework at another institution that I think is the equivalent to a CSUSM credential  course.  How do I find out for sure?

The College of Education does not maintain a list of equivalencies for credential program coursework taken at other institutions .  Please follow the procedure below to petition for credential coursework substitutions.

My course is not on the list of equivalencies can I petition faculty to see if it qualifies?

Yes.  If your course is not on the established list of equivalencies, the College of Education does have a procedure in place which allows students to petition.  Please do the following…

1.      Download the proper form

o       To substitute a course for Education 350, 364 or a co-requisite course [health education, constitution]…

Ø      Go to http://lynx.csusm.edu/coe/academics/PoliciesForms.General.asp

Ø      Download ‘Course Waiver Form’

o       To assess out of  EDUC 422 …

Ø      Go to http://lynx.csusm.edu/coe/academics/FormsPolicies.asp

Ø      Under ‘Forms & Policies Specific to Teacher Credential Programs’, download EDUC 422 Waiver

2.      Gather together supporting documents

o       Copy of course description and syllabus.  Course must be less than five years old.

o       Copy of transcript showing successful completion of course (at least a grade of C+)

o       Submit complete packet to the Student Services Center

Ø      Form

Ø      Copy of course description & syllabus

Ø      Copy of transcript

3.      Once packet is received…

o       …it is forwarded to the appropriate faculty member for review

o       Once decision is received back in the Student Services Center student will receive notification by email or mail

How long will take to hear back on a course waiver?

Turnaround time is typically three weeks but may be longer during times campus is closed (holidays) or faculty is off-campus (summers).

Who can I contact to find out the status of a course waiver?


If it has been more than three weeks since you submitted your waiver and you have not heard anything you may send an email enquiry to
coessc@csusm.edu .  The staff contact for the waiver procedure will follow-up and contact you by email.
