1. Which CSUSM courses meet the LOTER?

     - Arabic, French, German, Japanese & Spanish

     - Grade of “C” or better, or “Credit”

     - 201 or higher

     - NOT Spanish 205, Spanish 398, or SPAN 399

     - Specific courses listed here

2. Which courses outside CSUSM meet the LOTER?

     - Almost any language, including ASL!

     - NOT languages without written grammar rules, such as dialects or patois

     - At least 3rd semester, intermediate-level class (equal to or above 201 at CSUSM)

     - Note: Luiseno or Cupeno at Palomar must be 4th semester

     - At an accredited college or university – including study-abroad!

     - NOT online, conversation, or writing-only classes

     - SOME language schools MAY meet the requirement. Contact the

     - Grade of “C” or better, or “Credit”, or “Pass”

3. How do I know which CSUSM course to enroll in?

     - Meet with your academic advisor before registering for classes

     - For all classes but 101, bring an unofficial transcript or test score on the
          first day of class

     - If you think you should place higher than suggested below, speak to a
          professor in the World Languages and Hispanic Literatures
          Department (2nd Floor of Markstein)

     - General course guidelines:

          • Speak Spanish at home and would like to learn written grammar = can
               enroll in SPAN 250 “Spanish for Native Speakers”

          • No previous language study OR over 2 years since studied = generally
               enroll in 101.

          • 1 year of high school language within past 2 years OR 1 semester of
               college language within past 2 years AND performance not strong =
               generally enroll in 101.

          • 1 year of high school language within past 2 years OR 1 semester of
               college language within past 2 years AND did well = generally enroll
               in 102.

          • 2 years of high school language within past 2 years OR 2 semesters of
               college language within past 2 years AND performance not strong =
               generally enroll in 102.

          • 2 years of high school language within past 2 years OR 2 semesters of
               college language within past 2 years AND did well = generally enroll
               in 201.

          • 3 years of high school language within past 2 years OR 3 semesters of
               college language within past 2 years AND performance not strong =
               generally enroll in 201 OR study-abroad OR can try to pass Proficiency
               Exam instead!

          • 3 years of high school within past 2 years OR 3 semesters of college
               language within past 2 years AND did well = generally enroll in 202
               OR study-abroad OR should be able to pass Proficiency Exam instead!

          • More than 3 years of language? Consider majoring or minoring in the
               language OR study-abroad OR sitting for the Proficiency Exam!



4. What do I need to do to get documents processed?

     - If you took the course at CSUSM, nothing!

     - If your non-CSUSM transcript was part of your admissions packet to
          CSUSM (via an official score sent by the school directly), then
          Admissions checked the LOTER as MET.

     - If your non-CSUSM transcript was NOT part of your admissions packet, then
          have the university send an official transcript directly to:

               Office of Admissions and Recruitment
               California State University San Marcos
               333 S. Twin Oaks Valley Rd.
               San Marcos, California 92096

     - If your non-CSUSM transcript has been sent and the LOTER is not yet
          checked as MET, please contact your academic advisor.
