LLC Questions and Answers

Q. How do I sign in and out?

A. Upon entering the LLC, there will be a computer station where you will need to sign-in every time you come into the LLC. You will need to provide your campus ID number, then choose the activity you will be doing at the lab.
Q. Can I eat/drink here?

A. No. If you have any food or drink items we ask that you place them on the tables outside of the lab before you come in.
Q. When can I use the Language Learning Center?

A. You can view our operating hours on our main page here.

There will be times where the LLC will not be available due to testing, class activities, etc. We'll try our best to keep you updated on when the LLC becomes unavailable via our website or we'll post a message on our door.
Q. Does the Language Learning Center offer tutoring?

A. Yes, we do! All appointment scheduling is done online through our online appointment system which can be found by clicking here. Their general schedules can be found on the right of our main page found here.
Q. What does the Language Learning Center have available for the language learner?

A. Multi-lingual videos (VHS and DVD), language software, dictionaries, textbooks, workbooks, audio tapes, thesauri, all geared towards the language learner.
Q. How do I listen to the audio for my textbook/workbook?

A. We have all the audio for most of the textbooks used at CSUSM on the internet.

You'll need to get a few things ready:
- Username and Password issued by your instructor
- Headphones that DO NOT have the microphone attached

When you go to the audio page (available on the top side of the LLC homepage), a message box will appear that contains places for a Username and Password. You will enter in the Username and Password issued to you by your professor.
Q. I'm not currently enrolled in a language courses here at CSUSM. Can I still use the Language Learning Center?

A. Yes. However you may have limited access to material available in the LLC.
Q. Can I print here?

A. Yes. All print jobs go to the print station in the LLC Tech Room. Make sure you have a print card handy.
Q. Where do I get a print card?

A. You can get one at the Kellogg Library.
Q. Is this a 'quiet' lab?

A. No. Often at the LLC, students can engage in group work/discussion or even practice presentations for language classes.
Q. Are cell phones allowed in the LLC?

A. Yes. However, in consideration of others using the lab, we suggest that you set your phone to 'vibrate' mode.


PC Technical Questions and Answers

Q. Where can I get a Username/Password to logon to the computers?

A. You can go to the student help desk located on the second floor of the Kellogg Library. They'll set you up with everything you need to get into the computers here on campus.
Q. Can I type documents in a foreign language?

A. Absolutely. Microsoft Word supports a multitude of languages.

Q. What's an IME?

A. IME is an acronym for Input Method Editor. It is a means for inputting foreign languages for use in several Windows applications. For an example of an IME in use check out our Japanese IME tutorial.
Q. Is there spell checking for foreign languages?

A. Microsoft Word currently supports spell checking for Spanish, German, and French. There is also a grammar-check, but this will only correct minor grammatical errors.

Q. Windows Media Player? Real Player?!? Which do I choose?!?!?

A. Choose either one. Basically, we have these two formats of the same audio clip just in case one isn't working, we would have a backup version available.
Q. Why can't I hear anything on this computer workstation?

A. There can be several reasons for not being able to hear anything from the PC.

-Check your headphones. Make sure you're using the set without the microphone on it.

-Check the volume control on the headphone wire. Turn the dial clockwise to increase the volume.

-Check the computer's volume control. Double-click the icon that resembles a speaker on the lower-right hand side of your screen. Check to make sure if any of the selections are "mute"-ed.

-Check the volume on the Media Player application itself. There should be a volume control located on the Media Player itself. Make sure it's not "mute"-ed.

Q. Something's wrong with this computer. I need help!

A. Please feel free to speak to the Language Learning Center staff with any questions or concerns you may have. We're here to help!

Q. What is the CSUSM Language Other Than English Requirement (LOTER)?

A. All students, no matter their major, must pass the LOTER before graduating. For more information on your options, click here.
Q. Can I major or minor in a language?
