ELLI Graduate Internships (4)
The Escondido Public Library is looking for four
graduate interns to work in our literacy program for Fall 2003 and/or
Spring 2004. Literacy Services include three programs, Adult, Family
and Workplace Literacy, and through our efforts, create opportunities
and possibilities that come with a literate society. Our services
include collaboration with Palomar’s College Based English Tutoring
for parents of preschoolers and children. Recently, we added a
bilingual computer component to train parents so that they may
participate fully in their children’s learning. Through a state
funded grant, we also service four local elementary schools through
the English Language Learners Intensive (ELLI) program. Additionally,
we are in the developmental stages of a Workforce Literacy Program to
assist the community in securing the necessary skills to become
viable, productive members in the workplace.
As a Literature and Writing major, your skills
are needed to teach basic writing to adults with low literacy skills,
grammar workshops and communication classes. For the ELLI program,
instructors are needed to facilitate reading comprehension to 4th
and 5th graders through various activities that include
arts and crafts, drama and writing activities. Bilingual skills would
be a plus, but are not necessary. If you can commit 9 hours a week,
evenings and weekends may be available, you can earn up to 3 credits
per semester, 2 semesters maximum. In collaboration with CSUSM, we
provide on-going training and supervision, and give you the
opportunity to make a difference in a big way!
